Pupillage

The Head of the Pupillage committee is Martin Butterworth.
The policy of Citadel Chambers is to recruit pupils steadily and gradually, with the emphasis on quality.  We usually take at least one pupil per year.    That pupil will have a sound 2:1 degree or above, together with strong A-Level results.   

Chambers does not encourage speculative applications.   All vacancies and the closing dates for applications are advertised on the OLPAS website, in accordance with the requirements of the Bar Council. 

All applications should be by Curriculum Vitae, together with a manuscript covering letter addressed to "The Secretary of the Pupillage Committee" and not to any individual by name. 

The selection process begins with a sift of the applications received in response to an advertised vacancy.  A shortlist of about 10 to 12 candidates is drawn up, and those candidates will be invited for interview.  The pupillage committee tries to ensure that the same interview panel deals with each candidate.    After the first round of interviews, a second shortlist is compiled - usually 2 or 3 candidates.    Those candidates will be invited to attend assessed 3 day mini-pupillages.    During such a mini-pupillage, the candidates will spend time with a number of members of chambers and will be asked to complete a piece of written work.   Depending upon the particular field, a final round of interviews may take place. 

The current twelve month pupillage remuneration package is worth £15,000.

Mini-pupillage
A limited number of unfunded one-week mini-pupillages are available to students interested in a career at the Bar.   We regret that due to the nature of our work and the high number of applications received each year, we are unable to consider applications from students under 18 years old.   
Applicants should write to Cathlyn Orchard, enclosing a brief CV, and a list of dates of availability for the following 12 month period.   Please note applications by email are not accepted.

Please note for applications due to take place over the summer period, please apply no earlier than 1st November of the year prior to the summer you to wish to attend, and no later than the following 14th February.

Established practitioners
Chambers welcomes applications for tenancies from established practitioners.   All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence and should be made to Andrew Fisher Q.C. (Head of Chambers) or Mark Wall QC (Head of the Criminal Team).
